Your LSA Call Recordings Are a Free Sales Training Program
You pay about $100 every time Google hands you a Local Services Ads lead. Roughly 10 of those leads turn into one signed job, so a closed job costs you around $1,000 in ad spend. That number does not move because of your budget. It moves because of what happens in the first 60 seconds of the phone call.
Here is the part most contractors miss: Google records those calls for you. Every LSA lead in your dashboard has audio attached to it. You already paid for it. Almost nobody listens to it.
That audio is the cheapest sales training your office will ever get, and it is built from your real customers, in your market, asking about your jobs.
Where the recordings actually are
Open your Local Services Ads account and go to the Leads tab. Each lead shows the customer, the job type, the date, and — for phone leads — a recording you can play right in the browser. You can filter by booked, archived, or disputed.
Spend five minutes in there today. Do not analyze anything yet. Just confirm the recordings exist and that you can play them. Most owners are surprised by how much is sitting in that tab.
The five-call Friday habit
Do not try to listen to everything. You will quit by week two. Pick five calls a week:
- Two calls that turned into booked estimates. This is what "good" sounds like in your business.
- Three calls that went nowhere. The price shoppers, the hang-ups, the "I'll call you back" ones.
Block 30 minutes on Friday. Listen with whoever answers your phones. That is the whole system. Five calls, half an hour, once a week.
Score every call on the same five things
Opinions start arguments. Scores start fixes. Use one simple sheet and mark yes or no on each call:
- Answered in three rings or less? Speed is the single biggest lever you have.
- Did they get the name, address, and phone before talking price? No contact info means no follow-up, and the lead is gone.
- Did they ask what the customer actually wants done? Not "what's your budget" — what the job is.
- Did they ask for the appointment on that call? Out loud, with two specific time options.
- Did they confirm a clear next step before hanging up? A date, a text, a callback time — something.
Five yes answers is a 5 out of 5. Run 20 calls through this and the pattern shows up fast. It is almost never all five. It is usually the same one or two, over and over.
Fix one thing a week, not five
When you spot the pattern, change one line in how your office answers the phone. That is it. One change, then let it run a week before you touch anything else.
If nobody is asking for the appointment, the fix is a sentence: "I can get someone out Thursday morning or Friday afternoon — which is better for you?" If contact info is getting skipped, the fix is asking for the address first, before anything else. If the phone is ringing five times, the fix is who picks it up and when.
Small scripted changes stick. Big rewrites do not.
The math on why this beats raising your budget
Run the numbers on the same 10 leads. At about $100 a lead and 10 leads per closed job, you are at roughly $1,000 in ad spend per job you win.
Now say the Friday habit tightens up the phone answer enough that it takes 8 leads to close a job instead of 10. Same ads. Same budget. Same market. Your cost per closed job drops to about $800 — around $200 back in your pocket on every job you sell, forever, on spend you were already making.
Raising your budget buys more leads at the same conversion rate. Fixing the phone call makes every lead you already buy worth more. One of those is free.
One more thing the recordings tell you
Listen for the jobs you do not want. If half your recordings are people asking about work you do not do or areas you do not drive to, that is not a sales problem — that is a targeting problem, and it is costing you $100 a pop. That is a signal to clean up your job categories and your service area, and to dispute the leads that clearly do not qualify.
The calls tell you both things at once: how well you sell, and whether Google is even sending you the right people.
Start Friday. Five calls, five questions, one fix. If you want a second set of ears on your call recordings and your LSA setup, book a discovery call and we will go through them with you.
