What Is the Ideal Average Google Review Star Rating? (Hint: It's Not 5.0)

July 28, 2026

Every contractor we talk to wants a perfect 5.0 on Google. It feels like the finish line. It isn't. The data says a flawless 5.0 actually costs you calls — and the rating that books the most jobs is a little lower than you'd guess.

Here's what the research actually shows, and what number you should be aiming for.

A Perfect 5.0 Makes People Suspicious

Northwestern's Spiegel Research Center studied over 100,000 products across 22 categories. They found that how likely someone is to buy climbs as the rating climbs — up to a point. That point is somewhere between 4.0 and 4.7 stars. After that, it starts going down.

Not a single category peaked at 5.0. Not one.

The reason is simple. Perfect looks fake. About 46% of shoppers say they distrust a perfect 5-star rating. For people under 30 it's 53%. When every single review is glowing and nobody ever had a scheduling hiccup, homeowners assume you bought them or you only asked your cousins.

A 5.0 with 9 reviews doesn't say "flawless." It says "my brother-in-law left these."

But There's a Floor — and It Just Moved Up

Skepticism is only half the story. The other half is the cutoff, and for local services the bar is climbing fast.

BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found:

  • 68% of consumers require at least 4.0 stars to consider a business
  • 31% will only use a business with 4.5 stars or higher — up from 17% the year before
  • 97% read reviews before choosing a local business

Read that middle one again. That number nearly doubled in twelve months. The homeowner filtering your competition is getting pickier every year.

So if you're sitting at 3.9, roughly two out of three people won't even click your listing. You're not losing on price. You're losing before the conversation starts.

The Real Target for Home Services: 4.7 to 4.9

The 4.2–4.5 "sweet spot" comes from ecommerce, where someone is picking a $30 product off a shelf. Hiring a contractor is different. Somebody is letting a stranger into their house and handing over five figures. They want higher.

For remodelers, roofers, plumbers, and builders, aim for 4.7 to 4.9.

That range does two jobs at once. It clears the 4.5 filter that a third of homeowners now use. And it still looks human — a couple of 4-star reviews in the mix prove real people wrote them.

Two more numbers that matter as much as the average:

  • Volume. 47% won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. A 4.8 with 60 reviews beats a 5.0 with 6, every time.
  • Recency. 74% want reviews from the last three months. A great rating built in 2023 reads as a business that stopped growing.

The Math: Volume Is Your Armor

This is the part most contractors miss. Review count doesn't just build trust — it protects your average.

Say you have 20 five-star reviews. Perfect 5.0. Then one bad day, one angry homeowner, one 1-star review. Your rating drops to 4.81 overnight.

Now say you had 100 five-star reviews instead. Same 1-star review. You land at 4.96. Barely a scratch.

Same bad review. Completely different damage. Volume is armor.

It works the other way too, and the math is brutal. If you're at 4.3 with 30 reviews, getting to 4.7 takes about 40 straight 5-star reviews. Not four. Forty. That's why digging out of a bad rating takes months, and why you should never wait until it's a problem.

Stop Chasing the Number. Build the System.

You can't control your star rating directly. You control the system that feeds it.

Ask every customer — not your favorites, every one. Send the request automatically the day the job wraps, by text and email, while they're still happy. Make it one tap. Reply to every review, good and bad, because a professional response to a 3-star turns a liability into proof you show up when things go sideways.

Do that consistently and the average takes care of itself. Ratings, volume, and recency all come from the same habit.

Most contractors don't have that habit because nobody built the system. That's the part we handle — automated review requests firing after every completed job, so the asking never depends on remembering.
