How to Pick Your Primary Google Business Profile Category (And Why It Matters More Than Keywords)

August 05, 2026

Most contractors spend their marketing hour picking keywords. Which phrase to put on the homepage. Whether it should say "kitchen remodeling Fort Myers" or "Fort Myers kitchen remodeler."

Meanwhile there is a single dropdown menu on your Google Business Profile that decides more about your Google ranking than every keyword on your website combined.

It is your primary category. Most contractors set it once, four years ago, and never looked at it again.

What the primary category actually does

Keywords tell Google what you say you do. Your primary category tells Google what you are.

Google uses it as a filter. When someone in your town types "kitchen remodeler near me," Google does not read every website in the county and rank them. It first pulls the list of businesses whose category says kitchen remodeler, then ranks that list.

If your primary category is not on that list, your keywords never get a vote. You are not ranked low. You are not in the race.

That is the whole reason category beats keywords. Keywords decide how fast you run. Category decides which race you are entered in.

The data says the same thing

Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey asked 47 local SEO practitioners what actually moves the map pack. Google Business Profile signals came back as the single heaviest bucket, roughly a third of your local ranking. And the number one individual factor inside that bucket was primary category selection.

Not your website. Not your keywords. The dropdown.

We see it every time we audit a listing. We scored two dozen Google Business Profiles and the average was a 5 out of 10 — and a wrong or lazy primary category was one of the most common reasons a good company was invisible on Maps.

The rules, in plain terms

  • Google has around 4,100 business categories. That number moves — Google adds and retires categories a few times a year.
  • You get one primary category and up to nine additional ones.
  • The primary carries far more weight than the other nine put together.
  • Your category also unlocks features. Services, booking buttons, attributes, and which Local Services Ads job types you are eligible for all key off it.

How to pick it in about 20 minutes

1. Start with the job you want more of

Not the job you can do. The job you want the phone to ring for.

Most remodelers can technically do anything. So they pick "General Contractor" because it covers everything. That is exactly the mistake. "General Contractor" is a broad, crowded category, and it does not match what homeowners actually type. Nobody searches "general contractor near me" when they want a new kitchen. They search "kitchen remodeler."

Pick the category that matches your money job. If 60% of your revenue is kitchens, your primary category is Kitchen Remodeler.

2. Go look at who is already winning

Open Google. Type the exact phrase a homeowner would use — "bathroom remodeler Fort Myers." Look at the three businesses in the map pack.

The gray text right under each business name is their primary category. That is not a guess. Google prints it for you.

If all three of the businesses sitting above you say "Bathroom Remodeler" and yours says "Construction Company," you just found your problem.

3. Pick the most specific category that is still true

Specific beats broad every time. Specific tells Google exactly which searches to hand you, and it puts you in a smaller pool of competitors.

The word doing the work in that sentence is true. Do not set your primary to "Swimming Pool Contractor" because it looks easy to rank for. Google's algorithms and your competitors both report category abuse, and a suspended profile costs you every lead you have, not just the fake ones.

4. Add two or three secondaries, not nine

You have nine slots. That is not a target.

Every extra category adds a little noise to what Google thinks you are. Add the ones you genuinely sell and want work in — Kitchen Remodeler primary, then Bathroom Remodeler and General Contractor as secondaries. Skip the ones you would turn down if the phone rang.

5. Change it once, then leave it alone

When you change your primary category, expect two to six weeks of movement while Google recrawls and re-sorts you. Some of that movement is down before it is up.

Do not panic and flip it back on day nine. And do not measure the change by staring at your own rankings from your own phone — your phone knows where you are and lies to you. Measure booked calls.

A quick map for home service pros

  • Most of your revenue is kitchens → Kitchen Remodeler
  • Most of your revenue is bathrooms → Bathroom Remodeler
  • Whole-home builds on a client's lot → Custom Home Builder
  • Additions, whole-home renovations, mixed remodel work → General Contractor or Remodeler
  • Roofs → Roofing Contractor
  • Outdoor living, pavers, decks → Deck Builder or Landscaper, whichever is the bigger line on your P&L

One primary. The job you want more of. Everything else goes in the secondary slots.

The four mistakes we see most

  1. Too broad. "Contractor" or "Construction Company" as primary. It matches almost nothing homeowners type.
  2. Describing your license instead of the job. Your state calls you a Certified Building Contractor. Homeowners call you a remodeler. Use their word.
  3. All ten slots filled. A listing that claims to be ten things looks like an expert at none of them.
  4. Whatever Google auto-suggested at setup. Google guessed from your business name. Google guessed wrong.

The category gets you in the race. It does not win it.

Fixing your primary category makes you eligible. What decides whether you finish top three is everything else on the profile: review quality, volume, and how recently you got them, real photos, complete services, and a profile that gets touched more than once a year. Your Google Business Profile is your best salesperson, and most contractors leave it on mute.

Then there is the part nobody wants to hear: ranking better only makes the phone ring more. If those calls go to voicemail, you paid for nothing. That is why missed-call text-back is usually the cheapest fix on the whole list, and why we argue that you should build a pipeline instead of renting one.

If you only have one hour a week for marketing, spend the first twenty minutes of it on this. We broke down where the rest of that hour goes furthest here.

Do this today

Open your Google Business Profile. Look at the primary category. Ask one question: is this the exact phrase a homeowner types when they want the job I most want to sell?

If the answer is no, you have been running the wrong race, and no amount of keywords was going to fix it.
