Branded Search vs. Your LSA Budget: Why Ranking #1 for Your Own Company Name Still Needs Ad Spend

October 09, 2026

You rank #1 on Google for your own company name. Great. Now look at the top of that same search result — there's probably a paid ad sitting above your organic listing, and it might not even be yours.

This is branded search, and most contractors get it backward. They think once they own the #1 organic spot for their business name, the job is done. It isn't. Here's the math on why you still need ad spend defending the one search term you should never lose.

What branded search actually is

Branded search is anyone typing your company name into Google — "Smith Roofing," "Acme Remodeling Fort Myers," whatever your business is called. These are the warmest searches that exist. The person already knows who you are. They got your name from a yard sign, a referral, a truck wrap, or a past estimate. They're not comparison shopping five contractors — they're trying to find you specifically.

That's exactly why competitors bid on it. A roofer three towns over can buy a Google Ads campaign targeting your company name for a few dollars a click. When The Homeowner searches your business, an ad for a different company shows up first. Not because that competitor is better — because they paid to be there and you didn't.

The math that changes your mind

Run the numbers the way you'd run an LSA budget. Your Local Services Ads spend is pay-per-lead, not pay-per-click — roughly $100 a lead, and at a 15%+ close rate that's about 10 leads to land one closed job, or roughly $1,000 per closed deal. A branded search campaign is a different animal: pay-per-click, usually $1-3 a click because you're the obvious answer to your own name. But the close rate on branded clicks runs far higher than cold LSA leads, because the person already decided to look for you.

If even one in twenty branded searches gets intercepted by a competitor's ad and that homeowner clicks through instead of scrolling to find you, you didn't lose a stranger. You lost a job that was already halfway booked. That's the leak branded search spend plugs.

Why ranking #1 organically isn't enough

Organic ranking and paid ads occupy different real estate on the results page. Google shows paid ads above organic listings, full stop. It doesn't matter if your SEO is flawless and your Google Business Profile is dialed in — a competitor's $2-a-click ad can still sit above your #1 organic spot on a search for your own name.

Most contractors never check this. They look at their own name in an incognito window, see their website at the top, and assume the search is locked down. Do that search again and actually scroll — or better, check Google Ads auction insights if you're already running campaigns. You'll often find a competitor showing impressions on your brand term that you had no idea about.

Defending it without blowing your budget

You don't need a big number to protect your name. Branded campaigns are cheap precisely because you're the most relevant advertiser for your own brand — Google's Quality Score rewards that relevance with a lower cost per click. A modest daily budget, geo-targeted to your service area the same way you'd structure LSA geo-targeting by city, county, or zip, is usually enough to outbid an opportunistic competitor.

Set it, watch it for a month, and adjust. If nobody's bidding against your name, you'll spend almost nothing and the campaign just sits there as insurance. If someone is bidding against you, you'll see it in the auction data immediately — and you can dial the budget up the same way you'd dial up an LSA budget when lead flow dips.

Where this fits in your bigger lead picture

Branded search isn't a replacement for LSA, SEO, or your Google Business Profile — it's the last line of defense after you've already done the work to get found. You built the reputation. You earned the referral. Don't let a few dollars a day in competitor ad spend be the reason that homeowner ends up booking someone else's crew.
